Student Health Care Plans

Student health care plans are category of group Health Care Coverage and Insurance plans that are provided through a school for full-time students. The specific medical care services covered by the plan are selected by the school so there is substantial variation from one school to another in providing. In some cases the covered health services are preformed at the school’s health center or an associated university medical school. There are also Health Insurance companies that specialize in marketing to the student population. Most of the student specialty plans are a type of Indemnity insurance.

Why consider student health insurance?

If your adult dependent children can remain covered under your Individual/Family or employer group health care coverage plan you probably do not need student insurance. However, if they are no longer eligible or it is too expensive to keep your child on your present plan, you may want to investigate health care coverage plans that are often available through the school they are attending.

When comparing the cost of keeping a full-time adult child on your plan or through a plan marketed to the student population you should be aware that the student plans typically have much greater Limitations in both covered medical care and the maximum coverage amounts. You should also be aware that if your dependent child is currently without coverage and they have certain medical conditions, they may only be eligible for coverage under a group plan such as student or employer groups. If you have any concerns in this area, you should contact a lLicensed Certified Field Broker/Agent ( Click Here) who can help you determine whether the medical conditions are likely to be an issue or not. Ask them to check the underwriting guides for you.

The first step will be to contact the schools administrative office and ask them to send you information on the plans that may be available. With this information in hand you can compare your options and costs. If you are uncertain of the differences or language please the Glossary associated with this site or contact a local licensed field broker/agent to help you understand your options to your satisfaction (see list of CSA Broker/Agents).

Important things to be aware of:

Student insurance most often requires the enrolled student to do so at the beginning of the school year.

Students typically cannot apply for in the middle of the school year.

Most medical services are performed at the school’s health center. Services away from the school may cost more, involve a Deductible, and in some cases not be covered.

If your dependent adult child will remain covered under your own Group insurance, you may not need to purchase the school’s health plan.

Purchase school insurance, if your child has no other health insurance, or if it is costly for them to remain on your present policy.

It is very important to make sure your adult child is covered on vacations and during out of school periods.
