The National Library of Medicine classifies alternative medicine under the term complementary therapies. This is therapeutic practices which are not currently considered an integral part of conventional medical practice. These may lack biomedical explanations, but as they become better researched some, such as physical therapy, diet and acupuncture, have become widely accepted. Therapies are termed as Complementary when used in addition to conventional treatments and as Alternative when used instead of conventional treatment.
Others view Alternative Medicine as medical interventions not taught at United States medical schools or not available at United States hospitals. In this regard we may take all health systems and practices and their accompanying theories and beliefs that are outside those of the dominant health system in the US. It may include practices and ideas self-defined by their users as preventing or treating illness or promoting health and well being. Alternative therapies include, but are not limited to: folk medicine, herbal medicine, diet fads, homeopathy, faith healing, new-age healing, chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathy, massage, and music therapy. Mostly these therapies are sought out by individuals that have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, arthritis, cancer, back pain, and other medical conditions.
As has been witnessed now for many years some of these practices are really helpful and at times life saving. Therefore looking at what is covered in this regard by a plan you are considering is a very good idea. Unfortunately for those who seek Alternative Medicine, it is not considered part of the “mainstream” medical treatment and is only partially covered or not covered at all by most policies today. For many people having coverage in this are is an essential part of the ‘Coverage’ aspect of the Cost, Coverage and Control (Click Here ) trinity which represent the value they require from a plan.
The new HSA and HIA high-Deductible health plans (HCHP) may be something worth considering by anyone that seeks alternative medicine or chiropractic. You basically can establish a tax advantaged medical savings account that can be used for medical services that your Health Care Plan does not cover. You should consult with a Licensed Certified Field Broker/Agent (
